Reading Interest Among Indonesian Students

Reading is our way to open a window to the world. Someone who diligently reading can know all kinds of things that she or he does not know. The ability and willingness to read will affect knowledge and skills.

In Indonesia, the habit of reading only a small portion of behavior students. Study about "Most Literate Nations In The World" by Central Connecticut State University in 2016 placed Indonesia second only to Bostwana as the least interested in reading books among 61 countries surveyed. Among ASEAN member countries, Indonesia is the least literate. These conditions led to a lack of mastery of science and technology in Indonesia.

Indonesian low interest in reading is contrary to its interest in using internet. The easy access to information and the speed of flow information through internet have made Indonesian people less interested in reading books. Because the current technology, information and communication are highly developed making students prefer using media, such as smartphones and tablets to play a variety of social media.

Although in social media there is information can be read, but rarely a student who can utilize the phone for learning by read an e-books. Indonesian people, especially Indonesian students prefer the status updates, post events of interest in social media, than reading a books, novels, newspapers, magazines, articles or whatever kind.

Actually by reading books, we can improves memory and our vocabulary. By reading we can acquire knowledge. It also can boost our concentration. When we are reading books, such as a well written novel, self improvement and motivational books, magazines or comics, can help us to relax. It's the easiest way to have fun and release stress. Reading books  can help us imagine better. It requires us to use our creative imagination.  Reading also can improves writing skills. Your writing skill will develop through reading a different books.

Therefore, Indonesian Students must increase their reading interest. Because reading is the window to the world. By reading we can know all kinds of things that we didn't know. And by reading we can increase our knowledge and skills.
